FAQs

What is the best antivirus to use?

Whichever software works best on your system, is easy for you to use, and has all the features you require is the best one for you. Each user and the system they use is unique so it is advisable for you to look at several different products to see which is best for you, your level of experience, and your PC. You should of course make sure you only go with qualified and reputable providers.

Do we need to have both an antivirus and an anti-spyware scanner?

In some cases it may be useful to have both antivirus and anti-spyware. If you are experience spyware problems then you may want to add an anti-spyware scanner in addition to your antivirus software. However, if you are adding a new antivirus product then you will have to make sure you uninstall your existing antivirus program first. Also, make sure to reboot your computer before installing the new software.

Do I need to uninstall if I am upgrading?

No, if you are only upgrading your existing antivirus program to the newer version then you will not need to uninstall your existing program. However, if the new software is two or three versions newer than your existing program, then it is a good idea to uninstall before running the new program. Once again, make sure to reboot your computer before installing the new version.

Can two antivirus scanners be run on the same system at the same time?

You shouldn’t run two antivirus programs at the same time. You should uninstall your existing program before installing a brand new one. In some cases an antivirus scanner will not install if it detects another one already installed on your system.

What is a virus, a trojan and a worm?

Computer viruses are programs which attache themselves to, overwrites or otherwise replaces another program in order to reproduce itself without the knowledge of the PC user. Most viruses are fairly harmless, and may be on your system for years with no noticeable effect. However, some may cause random damage to data files or attempt to destroy files and disks.

Trojan Horses are programs intended so perform a malicious act that the victim is not aware of or wants. They do not reproduce like viruses but do install themselves covertly onto your system in order for another party to gain access to information.

Worms are programs which spread through network connections. They do not attach themselves to a host program, but uses the network to spread itself to other computer terminals (on the network). Worms will harm the network by consuming bandwidth.
