Security Threats: What to look out for

As internet use continues to skyrocket, the threat from internet security threats will grow alongside. As online activity such purchasing products has become readily available, some people are understandably sceptical of providing details online or even simply being bombarded with spam.

A virus, simply put, is a piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs without your consent. Like other viruses, computer viruses can replicate themselves, however they are manmade, and therefore other manmade products can combat them.

Viruses are reported to be snowballing. It is said that for every reported security threat there are probably 10 more that you never get to hear about.

The most recent headline grabbing security threat has been the ‘Storm Trojan’ outbreak, which pumped up spam volumes in January 2007. It got it’s name due to the email subject headings from email subject headings it touted. More recently, in February 2007, it seems to be at it again, this time spreading via Instant Messenger applications such as AOL (AIM), Google Talk, and Yahoo Messenger.

Better news to bear in mind is that while the ‘Storm Trojan’ outbreak is dangerous, it is nonetheless designed from a basic technique and can be countered with the appropriate software. Norton AntiVirus 2007, Norton Internet Security 2007, and Norton 360, if installed could all be effective in defending against and countering the virus.

Internet security risks do exist, but they won’t destroy the internet as some pessimists have predicted – you should be safe as long as you keep your computer protected.
